About the Memorial Project

Our Vision

The goal with the creation of this monument to Du Bois is threefold:

  1. to honor our most famous native son,
  2. to create a community gathering space using local materials
  3. to educate the community on Du Bois’ legacy and the process of creating the actual monument.

Sculpture of Du Bois

We have commissioned sculptor Richard Blake to create a bronze likeness of Du Bois. He will be seated on a curved stone bench in front of the library.

A New Library Plaza

We will partner with the town to repair front steps that are in poor condition, bannisters that are corroding the marble, and replace poor-functioning lighting. The area in front of the new benches will be leveled so it can better serve as a gathering place for the community.

Renovated Steps

The steps will be renovated in marble from the same Sheffield quarry that provided stone for the Washington Monument. Stone for the curving benches will be designed to match the color and texture of the marble.
